Patents 101 Workshop
Carol Miernicki, Launch Lab’s intellectual property specialist, created a Patents 101 workshop for students in the Loyalist College Entrepreneurial Studies Business Launch program (ESBL) on Thursday, September 10th.
Loyalist College’s post-graduate program connects strong ideas, entrepreneurial action and top talent. Their faculty creates a dynamic network of expert advisors to enable new start-ups to grow with limitless potential. Students learn to apply business principles in order to develop a scalable and profitable business model.
In January, the ESBL program received support from the Government of Ontario through Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE), with a $196,712 grant for On-Campus Entrepreneurship Activities (OCEA). Some of their key delivery partners include local entrepreneurs and our Regional Innovation Centre, Launch Lab.
Carol Miernicki is an intellectual property executive and registered patent agent, in both Canada and the United States. She has intensive knowledge in many disciplines, such as biotechnology, engineering, chemistry and materials. She continues to achieve great results and impacts clients, with her strategy and vision to implement solutions in challenging situations.
She shared her expertise with the ESBL students, teaching them about the common myths of what a patent is; why, when and how they are created and enforced. She presented an outline of the true definition of an “invention”, and the ways in which inventors can protect themselves from infringers.
