The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) is a Federal program (with additional help from Ontario) that uses tax incentives to encourage Canadian businesses of all sizes and in all sectors to conduct research and development in Canada. SR&ED distributes approximately $3B in tax credits each year, to 21,000 claimants of all sizes and in all sectors.

The SR&ED program is Canada’s largest single source of federal government support for industrial research and development, distributing approximately $3B in tax credits each year to 21,000 claimants of all sizes. Claimants can apply every fiscal year for SR&ED investment tax credits on expenditures such as wages, materials, some overhead, and Canadian SR&ED contracts, and can expect to receive 18 – 42% of their total SR&ED expenditures back in the form of either tax credits or refundable tax credits (i.e. cash).
